What is a Tilt Bucket?

A tilt bucket, also known as a tilt grading bucket, tilt ditching bucket or tilt ditch cleaning bucket, is a versatile excavator attachment designed for levelling material on a 45 degree angle. Unlike traditional excavator buckets, a tilt grading bucket features hydraulic mechanisms that allow it to tilt both left and right, helping eliminate machine repositioning. Excavator tilt buckets are most commonly used in landscaping projects for levelling uneven surfaces, creating slopes or sculpting landscapes from a flat platform. The tilt grading bucket is especially useful for landscapers when working on golf courses, lakes and extensive yard projects to carve out complex shapes and grade sloped areas.

5 Frequently Asked Questions about Excavator Tilt Buckets:

1. How does a tilt bucket work?

The tilt bucket is a standard excavator grading or ditch cleaning bucket fitted with integrated hydraulic cylinder. This bucket is connected to your excavator auxiliary lines, allowing the bucket to tilt 45° left and right. To get the most out of your tilting bucket, it’s important to understand how to use it properly, check out our simple fitting and use tips below.

Part 1: How to Fit a Tilt Bucket to Your Excavator

• Prepare the Excavator - Park your excavator on flat, level ground. Turn off the engine and release any pressure in the hydraulic lines by moving joysticks and pedals. Inspect your quick coupler or pin-on mounting bracket for wear, dirt or damage. Remove dirt or repair damages before fitting.

• Connect the Tilt Bucket

For Quick Coupler Fitting: Pick up your tilt bucket like you would any other excavator bucket or attachment - hooking the pins with your quick couple and locking your coupler to secure. Carry out a ground test by gently pressing the attachment against the ground to ensure a secure connection.

For Direct Pin-On: Line up the tilt bucket hangers with your dipper arm. Insert the mounting pins through the pin holes. Secure with retaining clips or bolts. Carry out a ground test by gently pressing the attachment against the ground to ensure a secure connection.

• Connect Hydraulic Hoses - Attach your hydraulic hoses to your machine’s auxiliary hydraulic ports, avoiding excess sag in the hoses to prevent snags. (This is easier if your hoses are fitted with quick release fittings.) Make sure your hoses are free from twists and securely fastened to avoid leaks. Start your excavator and slowly operate the auxiliary control to check for smooth movement and leaks.

Part 2: How to Use a Tilt Bucket

• Control Tilt Smoothly - Use your auxiliary hydraulic joystick in the excavator cab to control the tilt function. Apply smooth pressure left or right to begin the tilt - avoid abrupt movements as this can cause strain on the hydraulic rams and pivot point.

• Safety & Best Practices - Never use the tilt bucket for heavy digging or demolition - this will damage the tilt rams and pivot point. Do not use the bucket to pry or lift oversized loads. Check hose clearance frequently to avoid snagging or pinching.

2. Can I use a tilt bucket for digging?

A tilt bucket is not designed for heavy digging or breaking ground. Its primary purpose is grading, shaping and profiling - not penetrating hard or compacted materials like clay, rock or frozen ground. While you can use a tilt bucket for light grading in loose soil, topsoil or sand, using it for more demanding excavation can cause damage to the hydraulic rams, pivot point and hoses, leading to costly repairs. If your job involves digging through tough materials or trenching, it's best to use a standard excavator digging bucket or ripper tooth. Once the bulk of the digging is done, you can then switch to your tilt bucket for precise finishing, levelling or slope work.

3. Can you use an excavator tilt bucket with a quick coupler?

Yes, you can use a tilt grading bucket with a quick coupler. Fitting your tilting bucket to a quick coupler will allow you to mount your attachment much quicker and easier, saving valuable downtime when on the job. However, when using a tilt grading bucket on a quick coupler, it's important to bear in mind that the breakout force may be slightly reduced compared to using a direct pin attachment. Although, for light levelling and profiling jobs, this reduction in breakout force shouldn't pose a significant issue. The versatility and precision offered by the tilt grading bucket outweighs any minor decrease in breakout force, especially when paired with the convenience of changing attachments with a quick coupler. Operators can still achieve excellent results in shaping and grading terrain efficiently, making the combination of a tilt bucket and quick coupler an ideal choice for a wide range of construction and landscaping applications.

4. Does a tilt bucket reduce my breakout force?

The simple answer is yes, but the impact is generally minor and depends on your setup. Tilt buckets are larger and heavier than standard digging or grading buckets due to the added hydraulic rams and tilting mounting bracket. This extended profile reduces the amount of force applied when grading. This reduction in breakout force is most noticeable when the tilt bucket is mounted to the excavator using a quick coupler. Quick couplers, while excellent for switching attachments quickly, add extra distance between the arm and the bucket, which reduces the force at the cutting edge. However, for most tilt bucket applications - like grading, shaping slopes, backfilling, and working on soft ground - this decrease in force doesn’t pose any real problem.

To maximise performance, some operators choose to mount their tilt buckets directly to the dipper arm (using a pin-on system) instead of through a coupler, which helps preserve a bit more breakout power. Ultimately, while a tilt bucket may slightly reduce breakout force, it's rarely a drawback in the type of work it's intended for - and the added versatility often outweighs the difference.

5. What maintenance does an excavator tilt bucket need?

Like any hydraulic attachment, an excavator tilt bucket requires regular maintenance to keep it performing at its best and to extend its working life. One of the most important aspects is keeping the hydraulic system in good condition. This includes routinely checking the hydraulic hoses for wear, leaks or cracks, especially around connection points. Since the tilt function depends on smooth hydraulic movement, any damage or blockage in the hoses can lead to reduced performance or even failure. It’s also a good idea to inspect the rams for any signs of oil leaks, and keep the pivot pins greased to prevent seizing or premature wear.

In addition to the hydraulic components, you should regularly check the bucket’s structure for wear or damage, particularly around high-impact areas like the leading edge. Rhinox tilt buckets come with a bolt-on wear blade, which is designed to protect the cutting edge. This blade should be monitored for wear and flipped or replaced when necessary to prevent it from wearing down the bucket’s main edge. Cleaning dirt and debris with keep the tilt mechanism moving freely and keep the bucket weight to a minimum to maintain efficient grading.

Rhinox Excavator Tilt Bucket - 3x Thicker Leading Edge & Wear Plates

Heavy Duty Construction

Rhinox excavator tilt buckets are renowned for their heavy-duty, durable construction, thanks to a reinforced design that includes wear plates, a reinforced leading edge, and a solid center web. The wear plates and reinforced edge protect high-impact areas during tough grading work, while the center web adds structural strength and stability. This durable design makes the Rhinox tilt grading bucket a reliable and essential attachment for professional landscapers.

Although the Rhinox tilting bucket is made with a heavy duty construction to withstand wear over time, this doesn't detract from the fact that this bucket is NOT designed for harsh digging or demolition work. If you chose to use the bucket in this way, you will likely damage your hydraulics and tilting function leaving your bucket with an expensive repair job.

Rhinox Excavator Tilt Bucket - Rams

Rams

The benefit of the Rhinox tilt ditch cleaning bucket is the ability to tilt the bucket 45 degrees left and right, allowing the operator to work on slopes and uneven terrain more efficiently. This tilting action is powered by the inbuilt rams, which work with the hydraulics to tilt the bucket. The Rhinox tilt ditching bucket is manufactured with a single or dual ram mechanism (depending on the size of your bucket) to give you the greatest flexibility so you can get the right angle for your finishing job.

Rhinox Tilt Bucket - Headstock Hydraulic Hoses

Hydraulics & Hoses

Working alongside the rams are the hydraulics and hydraulic hoses. The Rhinox tilting bucket connects to the same hydraulic connections as a standard excavator thumb or hydraulic breaker making it quick and easy to fit when ready to use. All Rhinox tilt ditch cleaning buckets come fitted with the hydraulic hoses that connect the ram to the headstock, however we do not provide the hoses required to connect the headstock to the excavator arm. Every excavator has different hose requirements, so you will need to source the necessary hydraulic hoses for your machine make and model from your local hydraulics specialist. You will need hoses with 1/2" flat face couplings.

Lip Plate & Bolt-on Wear Blade

Similarly to your standard grading bucket, the lip plate of your tilting bucket will wear down over time. To help slow this wear and extend the life of your bucket, the Rhinox tilt bucket comes fitted with a replaceable bolt-on wear blade as standard. A wear blade is designed to protect your lip plate from wearing back, in turn protecting your bucket edge welds. Once one side of your bolt-on blade has worn back in line with the edge of your bucket, you can remove it, spin it round and refit it to continue the wear protection.

Data Plate

As with all Rhinox excavator buckets and attachments, our tilt grading bucket comes fitted with an identification data plate. This ID plate is usually located on the top of the bucket, around the hangers, and provides you with the weight of the attachment and the capacity to give you confidence that you have the right attachment for your machine and allows you to work within your machine specifications.
